City of San Antonio & Bexar County have a lot of automobiles in their fleets that are paid for by the taxpayers. However none of these were made at plant of South Side Toyota. The local leaders were 8 and half years ago as ground got broken on Toyota plant. The car company was praised for bringing down a lot of jobs.
In spite of that, there aren’t any Toyota trucks having county or city logos. A lot of Toyota Priuses are purchased, but there aren’t any trucks. Jorge Perez, the Director of Building & Equipment Services is the department which buys vehicles. He says that the city isn’t against Toyota and that they welcome the company.
Apart from that, he said that this is need of full size and compact trucks and there are 324 of such vehicles on fleet. However, there are no Toyotas. According to him, there aren’t any dealers from Toyota to submit bids. The dealerships of Toyota have opted to stay away from bidding. This county doesn’t have any Tacomas or Tundras either, but question sparked off an inspection regarding why.
Ben Garza, the County Purchasing Agent said that Toyota trucks will soon roll along with the county logos. Garza said the main vehicles or items that they purchase are Ford F-150s & Tahoes (Chevy). Garza says that county will be able to buy trucks of Toyota on co-op basis and this will make them eligible to purchase by any of the county departments.
Before this question, he said that department heads just didn’t know that they were affordable choice.
Garza says they will be educating the offices and departments to inform them about the available options. He says county will be purchasing trucks of Toyota from South Texas in future.
Vehicle Replacement Committee of the county recommends which automobiles you need to buy and sell. There is list of the proposed purchases which are brought before the court commissioners for getting final approval.
